Painted in the south east of Botswana during my last visit there during February of 2008. This view shows long shadows during late afternoon near the village of Pelagano in the hills west of its capital Gaberone. These aloes reminded me of the giant Yackui in the Mojave desert and Saguaro in the Sonoras of southwestern United States.
They dominated the hills around Pelagano because of their sheer size and commanding presence. Unexpected high rainfall had earlier clad the red earth with a carpet of verdant green and these plants injected a soft cobalt like hue amomg these attractive colors. Clouds such as these rolled across the heavens for days and I made ample use of this dramatic influence.
