Artist's Description
Glomerular capillary. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through kidney tissue, showing a capillary from a glomerulus. Glomeruli filter waste products from the blood. This occurs through the narrow slits between interlocking pedicles - branching processes on the podocyte cells that encase the glomerular surface. Fenestrated endothelium (green) lines the capillaries and is separated from the podocytes (brown) by a basement membrane (blue). Magnification x8000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
