Artist's Description
Gorse (Ulex europaeus) flower bud, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). One of the petals (yellow) is seen enclosed in the flower casing (calyx). The calyx consists of sepals (green), leaf-like structures that protect the flower bud. Trichomes are seen on the sepal surfaces, giving them a hairy appearance compared to the smooth surface of the petal. Magnification x20 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
