Artist's Statement Most journalists, documentarians, and “photo purists” would have you believe that the photographs they make are in some way a record of “reality”. I maintain that photography is no more “reality” than is any other art form. Even in journalistic photographs the photographer manipulates, in so many ways, what is recorded in order to reflect his or her own sense of reality. The choices of viewpoint, color or black and white, focal length of lens, brightness, contrast and sharpness can all affect the meaning of the image. And, of course, each viewer brings his or her own point of view to the experience. For me, making photographs and viewing them is about seeing differently. It is a distillation process. Much as poetry...
