Recently a family of American Kestrel, formerly called sparrow hawks, nested in a neighboring palm tree here in the desert Southwest near Phoenix, Arizona. I was so thrilled to be able to view their activity for an entire week before they moved on. At first we heard the feeding frenzy in the tree and then were able to glimpse the young birds perched all along the palm fronds. After they began learning to fly, they would venture from one palm tree to another and then back to home base.

I took many photos for reference for this painting. During that process I realized the diet of the birds consisted mostly of small lizards which they managed to swallow whole! That was not a pretty sight, but all part of nature and learning how these beautiful creatures survive.
