Love it!!

I am a fellow member of ‘Macro photographs’ and I am just taking a quick run though to vote your FEATURED work. V &F … Elaine

Thanks Angelina. The macro rig I used is an unusual one, but does a very good job. I use one of my 50mm manual lenses, (Pentax 50mm f1.7 I think) all at least 30 years old, with a binocular lens attached to the front filter ring. The binocular lens just slips on and fits pretty snug so it doesn't fall off, and acts as a magnifying glass. It gets excellent detail, as you can see, but same as any other macro setup the depth of field is minimal. No light loss, so f8, for example, stays f8. Since it's high quality glass, I think it does better than the screw on magnifiers. Don't know what hte magnification is, the main disadvantage is it will only focus no further away than about 6 inches at infinity. So I have to get very close. But it's worth it...the grasshopper shot was done with the same setup, but a different lens, 50mm A series f 1.4. I have a couple others posted using this rig too, and a couple using a conventional extension tube setup. (the Asters and lizards)

Wow...that's crazy details! Insects are so interesting looking close up like this.

About Billy Griffis Jr

Billy Griffis Jr

I've been a photographer for about 30 years, starting with a Pentax 35mm K 1000. I've used several others, and I now use Pentax digital equipment. I'm mostly self taught, but with the help of a couple of good photography books and quite a bit of online information. I mostly focus on (pun intended) birds, and wildlife, and have gotten very interested in macro photography, also nature oriented for the most part. I go out in the field primarily to shoot birds, but if it's a slow day then I look for flowers, insects and various wildlife. I look forward to being a part of this site, and hopefully will even sell a picture or three. All images © Billy Griffis Jr
