Around 2004 an unusually strong seasonal surf has washed away layers of sand all along Pupukea Beach, just east of the big-surf mecca of Waimea, to reveal dozens of large glyphs carved into the bench of lava rock. More than 70 carvings have been exposed, mostly depicting human-like figures and dogs.

Though the petroglyphs were seen after a strong surf, they must have been left in place because they were not seen again until the exceptionally strong tides of 2010 laid them bare again.

Today, these figures have become a part of Hawaiian art work on just about anything the tourist can buy, or anything needed to depict Ancient Hawaii.
