Artist's Description

The Helix nebula is the largest and probably the closest planetary nebula to our solar system. The "shell" is an emission nebula created by the central star, which is at the end of it's life cycle. The central star expanded and then ejected hydrogen, nitrogen (red & orange) and oxygen (blue/green) before collapsing into a hot white dwarf star. This image is 184 minutes of exposure through a 60mm telescope using clear, red, green and blue filters.
