On the facade of Union Station, above its front entrances, are six statues by American sculptor Louis St. Gaudens, the brother of renowned sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens. Collectively, these statues are entitled “The Progress of Railroading” and each represents a mythological figure; from left to right there is Prometheus, for fire; Thales, for electricity; Themis, for freedom and justice; Apollo, for immigration and inspiration; Ceres, for agriculture; and Archimedes, for mechanics.
Union Station has sometimes been called “America’s Railroad Station.” Located on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, it is the city's center for subway and all rail traffic, including Amtrak train service up the busy "eastern corridor" with stops in Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City and Boston. The station was built in 1907 and was its busiest during World War II when an average of 200,000 passengers a day passed through its enormous main hall and exited primarily from the building bene...
I enjoy photography and writing, and sometimes think of myself as a photojournalist. If there is a story to be told with a photograph, I tell it. As a longtime resident of Washington, DC, a lot of my photographs are of this area, and I enjoy writing in the description something about the shot -- it could be a short statement about an equestrian statue in the middle of a park, or a more intimate tale of the mausoleum where Abraham Lincoln's son, Willie, was entombed for the remaining three years of Lincoln's presidency after the boy's death.
