Description
Hubertus Strughold (1898-1986), German-US physiologist. Known as the father of space medicine, Strughold was head of the German Air Force Institute for Aviation Medicine during the Nazi years and taught aviation medicine at the University of Berlin. During World War Two he may have been involved in the lethal physiological experiments performed on inmates at the Dachau concentration camp. Strughold emigrated to the USA after the war, working at the US Air Force Department of Space Medicine. He became the world's first professor of space medicine, developing the pressure suits worn by astronauts. Photographed in 1959.
