Artist's Description
Jacquard loom, 19th century. Illustration of a Jacquard loom being used to weave a carpet in France. This loom was invented by French weaver Joseph Marie Jacquard (1752-1834) and first demonstrated in 1801. It is an example of the mechanization of the textile industry. Artwork from volume 4 (1875) of a republication of 'Les Grandes Usines', a multi-volume work on French industry by journalist and author Julien Turgan (1824-1887).
