Artist's Description

Gresham, Oregon had a parade in 1919 that celebrated the first Fourth of July after the end of WWI. Floats and celebrants were everywhere. The roads were still dirt roads and they even decorated the Statue of Liberty replica in the square. A sign on the base of the statue read," Keep to the Right." Perhaps this had some special meaning to it. The whole town was draped in flags. One man was there in front of the statue not wearing a hat .... that was me ( I decided to be in this old picture, that now hangs as a mural in the city hall .... Keeps me famous in perpetuity.

I began painting as a child. My mother would give me pictures to copy, not trace. She would draw wedding cakes, high heel shoes, couples dancing and never a car or truck. She had been a commercial artist during the nineteen thirties and never stopped encouraging me in the arts. After high school I went to California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco . After art college I returned to Portland, Oregon to pursue the art of dentistry. I retired from dentistry a few years ago (I'm still practicing at the Geriatric Dental Clinic in Portland), but I hope to keep painting until I can no longer hold a brush. I paint realism, but mostly I paint "realism with an attitude." I love the ability to enhance what I see with an emphasis on color and...
