Beautiful photo! I've heard about this artist before, and wondered at first why he centered his artwork around so many almost caricature-like smiling portraits. Didn't give it too much thought at first, just figured it was his own signature quirk. Meanwhile, on a totally different tangent, I had submitted a photo of an old Chinese mask on deviantart a few years ago (link). I had no idea what the mask represented or what the inscription on his forehead meant, until a fellow artist from China was able to translate it for me as a representation of an ancient Buddhist monk called Ji Gong or Daoji (with the word Buddha on his forehead). A monk known for his wild and eccentric behaviour, and most always portrayed with a big smile on his face :-) Now that I've seen your photo, I'm thinking maybe there's a personal connection this artist is trying to establish with this ancient Buddhist monk while putting his own modern spin on it.

upon first glance it does make you want to it.....v/fb

Artist's Description

One of Yue Minjun's "A-MAZE-ING LAUGHTER" series of large patinated bronze statues commissioned for Vancouver's Biennale 2009 - 2011. The statues were so popular that the city purchased them as a permanent display. Yue Minjun uses his own iconic face in a state of hysterical laughter as a signature trademark. Recognized universally as a sign of happiness, the 'smile' raises questions of intent and interpretation. One of the most influential contemporary artists in China, Yue Minjun represents the new wave of Chinese artistic freedom. "SHI XIANG SHENG" represents Yue Minjun's Canadian debut. This is the actual color of the bronze and the white sky behind - no photo manipulation.
