Artist's Description
Libyan peoples. 17th-century artwork showing Libyans (men and a child) crossing the desert on camels (top) and Libyan women (with a child) gathering fish and ostrich eggs (bottom). The archaic spelling 'Lybiens' is at top. This engraving is from Book I of 'Voyages en Afrique, Asie, Indes orientales et occidentales' (1617) by the French explorer Jean Mocquet (1575-c.1617). This 442-page work, divided into six books, described Mocquet's travels in Africa, Asia, and the West and East Indies.
