Artist's Description

Rainbows were considered sacred by the Incas. They are common near Machu Picchu and over the nearby Urubamba Canyon, especially in the rainy season, and add to the already impressive atmosphere of the site and its location. Machu Picchu is arguably the most famous archaeological site in South America and sits high on a ridge above the Urubamba River not far from Cusco. This image shows a llama grazing contentedly on the Inca terracing below the Watchman's or Caretakers Hut, above the main part of the site. Photograph © James Brunker.
