A pencil rendering from one of my photos, the Leviathan is the modern remnant of the grand telescope of the Third Earl of Rosse, who constructed the great instrument in 1845 and, with it, saw path-breaking views of distant nebulae and galaxies.

Lady Rosse, his wife Mary Field, was an accomplished blacksmith and a noted photographer, who's own efforts not only helped in the telescope's initial construction in the 19th century, but whose careful, detailed photographs allowed its rehabilitation in the 20th century.
