This piece has been featured in the FAA Group, "Small Birds of the World". This was the first day the adult Barn Swallows had their young family away from the nest. The babies spent time on various parts of the railing and roof, waiting for their parents to arrive with food. Each time a parent would approach with an insect in it's beak that it had gathered while flying over the nearby hay field, the babies would open their mouths and chirp, hoping each one's chirp would be the one to bring the insect to it's mouth. The Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica) is the most widespread species of swallow in the world. It is a distinctive passerine bird with blue upperparts, a long, deeply forked tail and curved, pointed wings. It is found in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas. In Anglophone Europe it is just called the Swallow; in Northern Europe it is the only common species called a "swallow" rather than a "martin".
