Artist's Description
The critically endangered black and white ruffed lemurs live in the canopy
of the rainforests in eastern Madagascar. Their bright staring yellow eyes
glow in the dark and their elaborate system of loud barks may be alarm calls
or a method of keeping contact and maintaining spacing between groups.
About Margaret Saheed
While photography has always been a passion, my painting adventure began after visiting a wildlife art exhibition in Melbourne, Australia. Exploring ways to create colorful contemporary images featuring animals, flowers and other elements of nature was a new venture for me. Now I am studying the exciting creation of digital paintings. Having graduated from Melbourne University with a BA(Hons) specialising in international relations, I am interested in portraying the world's exotic species. My aim is to capture their unique personalities and hope they will inspire you to learn more about wildlife and conservation. Images Copyright 2024 Margaret Saheed. All Rights Reserved.

Duke University in the US has a lemur breeding program. My husband and I sponsored one called Praesepe who looked just like this. Happily, when she was released in Madagascar she soon ran off with a wild group and began raising families. Your lovely painting has brightened my evening.
Margaret Saheed replied:
Susan, ruffed lemurs are my favorite wildlife. Only recently I told someone about the Duke Lemur Centre and their programs. I'm glad Praesepe was released successfully. This boy was a partner to the founder female here in her later years and she features in my other two ruffed lemur paintings!

I love this lemur Margaret. You surely captured their intense staring expression!
Margaret Saheed replied:
Thanks June. Did you know that lemurs have retained the 'eye shine' like cats so their eyes glow in the dark!
