Artist's Description
Magnetism experiment. 19th-century artwork of a permanent iron magnet in a form called a horseshoe magnet, placed on an electromagnet (two coils of wire around metal cores). A horsehoe magnet is formed by bending a bar magnet to bring the opposite magnetic poles closer together. This produces a stronger magnetic field, allowing the horseshoe magnet to be used to temporarily magnetise or lift other iron objects. Electromagnets can be turned on and off, using electricity to magnetise objects. Artwork from the 4th volume (second period of 1889) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
