"Market House Sunrise" . . . Photograph by Matt Plyler.

For several days each year, around Veterans Day and January 29th, the sun rises so that is is perfectly aligned with the openings underneath the Fayetteville Market House. Baring clouds or an overcast day, the Market House Sunrise allows a unique opportunity to view the sunrise. The Fayetteville Market House is a unique historic structure that was spared by General Sherman due to its unusual architecture as he marched through Fayetteville during the Civil War.

Although I have several shots of the sunrise at the Market House, I absolutely love the details in this particular image. The starburst is natural, created by the sun shining through the tree limbs and leaves on the other side of the archway. The woman sitting on the steps wrapped in a brightly colored blanket adds a human element.
