This rural Saskatchewan farm house is still part of the family and the memories that go with it. These buildings were once the site of family gatherings and many celebrations of the people who called this place their home. One can only imagine the history that goes along with this lovely building.
From the owner of the property..."The place was homesteaded in 1897 by Hryhori Skibinsky. The house was built in the early 1900's and actually is a log house covered with siding.
In the 1930's during the depression it was a popular place. Ukrainian bachelors who worked as labourers in summer would exchange labour in winter for a place to stay and for food
The building in the front of the house in the pictures was called a chytalia or reading house and was where these men lived in winter reading and playing cards passing the long winter evenings there. The main road at the turn of the century was between the house and the reading room running east and west.
