The legendary red-trousered fighting 14th Brooklyn (14th New York State Militia or "The Red-Legged-Devils") of Lysander Cutler's charged toward the unfinished railroad Cut to aid in the capture of Joe Davis's Mississippi Brigade, West of Gettysburg on July 1st 1863. The 14th Brooklyn was dressed in their distinctive Chasseur patterned uniform replete with red trousers. The 14th had the distinction of being among the first infantry regiments to reach the field and engage the Confederates and also was one of a few units to fight all three days of the battle. The 14th repulsed the attack of the 10th Virginia on the Union Right flank at Culp's Hill helping to support the 137th New York.
