Artist's Description

Based upon an historic photo taken by C.W. Carter in 1879 of a Mormon Wagon Train making its way down what appears to be Echo Canyon on the trail to Utah. Nearly 500,000 pioneers made an arduos trek to Oregon, California, and Utah in the 19th century. Fifty thousand died mostly from infectious disease in pursuit of a new life. The Mormons were some of the earliest on the trails. In the 1840's, they began their decades long exodus to new lands in the west. They suffered horrendous difficulty along the way. But, they put their faith in the Lord and a Wagon Train Master and guide to lead them safely to their destination and a new life. That may very well be him standing like a dutiful Shepherd on the hill overlooking the procession of mule- and oxen-pulled wagons and the families making their way down the rugged hill.
