This is a quick sketch of Chiggy-bump, my husband's mustang mare. She is his favorite horse of all time, adopted from a BLM roundup when she was 4 years old. So, she spent the first years of her life in the wild, and comes from a herd with about 80% Spanish heredity. She's now about 18. She and Juel have a special relationship. Mustangs tend to be one-person horses, and though she is fond of me, too, Juel is the only one who can ride her. Even then she is full of surprises, which Juel calls "Chiggy-bump Moments." We might be riding peacefully along a mountain trail, when without warning she's left the trail and is scrambling up the steep, precarious scree toward the peak! She's given Juel some hair-raising times, but he's still crazy about this old mustang mare.
I have been an artist since I was knee high to a short-horned locust. My dad, Willoughby Senior (FAA) was a professional artist and writer and I have stepped in his shoes since I was born, though he drew horses better than I did when I was a kid. My family lived in a hand-hewn log cabin we built ourselves in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and had no water or electricity. I love my life with my husband and family in Wyoming among the horses, gophers, deer, antelope, coyotes, red-tailed hawks, and the wild landscape. My work is driven by the land, animals, wild plants and birds I have come to know so well. Hummingbirds still try to get nectar from my upturned fingers. My artwork consists of all these things and more...

Dawn~I rediscovered this art while doing a search on Google for your name and it came up under Images. I love this! And Chiggy-Bump needs all our good thoughts right now as she had surgery 10 days ago for a tumor in her mouth. She's having some difficulty recovering, but is slowly perking up. We love you, Chig!
