In 1963, Willoughby and his family built their own log cabin on a rocky, steep and rugged hillside in the foothills of Wyoming's Snowy Range. While the night blizzards raged and the wind yanked at the roofboards, the family slept, cozy and serene. But Willoughby didn't sleep this night. By flickering candlelight, he studied the kitchen corner so that he could create this painting the following day.

Willoughby graduated from the National Academy School of Fine Art in New York City in two years, rather than the traditional four years. He was the author and illustrator of the book "Smoke Upon the Winds," published by Swallow Press, about his experiences over 25 years among the Hopi ("People of Peace"). One reviewer called him a "truly participatory observer." He also spent those years among his Navajo friends. Willoughby got his B.A. in Philosophy.
