Circa 1900 gouache and pastel on canvas by French artist Paul Elie Ranson. The Nautchis of the title were dancers in India who 'performed in plays staged for the entertainment of lower-class people,' according to a University of Southern Mississippi dissertation 'Treatment of a Wife's Body in the Fiction of Indian Sub -Continental Muslim Women Writers' by Hafiza Nilofar Khan. So now you know! Ranson was born in Limoges in 1864 and died in Paris in 1909. From around 1890 he was a member and creative leader of the Nabis group, who were a splinter movement of avant-garde post-Impressionists with their own unique ideas about art and artistic technique.
