New Orleans City Park was devestated by the post-Katrina flood but is now back and truly better than ever. There are still plenty of ancient moss-dripping Live Oak trees in the park. In fact, City Park still has the largest collection of mature live oaks in the world. The oldest one are estimated to be 600-800 years old.
Generations of New Orleanians have climbed on the huge trees, bounced on their springy lower limbs, met under their limbs, and strolled through their shade. City park was originally an oak tree swamp and later a plantation. When it was just outside the city limits of New Orleans where dueling was banned, men would meet under the dueling oaks here for duels - One of those dueling oak trees still remains. It's right next to the Sculpture Garden and has a marker.
City Park is well beyond your typical green space beginning with these incredible trees. Because spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) only grows well in humid southern locale...
