What a fantastic image Mark!

Great shot Mark, congrats on your sale.

Beautiful light and colors.

Awesome image Mark!

It's a masterpiece Mark.

The opportunity was there and you took it. The cloud formation and it's reflection made for a marvelous take. The colors and textures are almost beyond belief. Guess like the lady before me said. one word covers and that is STUNNING! Thanks for sharing your marvelous talent with me and others.

Thanks, Deborah and Wendy for the kind words!

Stunning image! l/f

Mark you have a great eye. Cheers to ya!

Thank you, Dee Dee and Nikolyn for the great words! I'm honored to participate in the contest and place an image!

Breathtaking! Congratulations on your win.

Beautiful colors and two fine points of interest to draw the eye - the sun and the ship. Congratulations on your tie for1st place in the recent Sunrise Sunset contest.

Thanks so much, Debra, Rebecca, Dianna, and Barbie! Definitely sad to see the boat beached and no remedy for it to get back to sea. I felt somewhat conflicted about photographing it as such. However, it did tell a real story about the area and the dangers of its shoals: hence the notorious nickname "Graveyard of the Atlantic" for the many shipwrecks that occurred here in history because of the convergence of two major currents and the topography that creates.

Congrats on your win in the sunrise sunset contest! So sad to see the boat in this position, though!

Beautiful piece ! Well deserved win. Congratulations!

Breath taking! Congrats!

Beautiful!!! Congrats on your win in the Sunrise Sunset contest!

Honored Carol! That is so awesome!

Thank you, Rima for the good words!

Congratulations on winning the Sunrise Sunset Contest!

This is so beautiful, real but almost surreal. Love this!

Thanks, Cindy! What a morning to be on the beach with a camera in hand!!

love this Mark!

Thanks so much folks for the great words! I was vacationing with my family when this shot was conceived. We drove past the beach in daylight on the way to our rented home for the week and noticed the two masts above the dunes. After some research as to where the ships were, my mother and I returned at sunrise to photograph the boats and couldn't have ever imagined the conditions that we would see! It was a phenomenal sky over what was definitely a tragic end for someone's property. Difficult to photograph because of that reason, but very illustrative of the nature of the Outer Banks and the shoals offshore.

Artist's Description

Along the North Carolina coast a series of barrier Islands known as the Outer Banks just about completely block access to the mainland, presenting an intricate labyrinth of inlets, sounds, and hazards. As if that weren't enough, two opposite and opposing currents collide, the cold arctic south flowing Labrador Current and the north-flowing warm Gulf Current, resulting in rough waters and unpredictable currents. Shallow sandbars form, known as the Diamond Shoals, creating a minefield for marine navigators. The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau lists some three-thousand plus shipwrecks along the stretch of coast from Kitty Hawk to Ocracoke since records began!
