Pulteney Bridge is one of those surprises that sometimes greet you when visiting a far away place with little advance planning. I had certainly heard for the Roman Baths from which the city gets its name. I had even heard a smattering of information about the beautiful abbey and the Georgian architecture, but beyond that, Bath was an unread book for me.

But places like Pulteney Bridge made reading it worthwhile! This elaborate little Georgian bridge built in the Palladian style is one of only four in the world lined on both sides by shops. It was built in the 18th century to connect a new development, Bathwick, across the River Avon with the main city on the other side.

Crossing the bridge almost feels like walking down any city street in Bath. But like long ago London Bridge, Pulteney Bridge is a destination as much as a thoroughfare.
