Artist's Description

Panther chameleon. Close up of a panther chameleon's (Furcifer pardalis) coiled tail. Panther chameleons are indigenous to the tropical forests of Madagascar and are often very brightly colored. Chameleons have long, dextrous tails that they can move and use almost like a fifth leg. They are often seen carrying their tail curled up as shown. Chameleons use their tails to balance and grip onto tree limbs and also sometimes as a weapon. Photographed in the Montagne des Francais Reserve, Madagascar.
