These Gambel's Quail are so much fun to watch as they scury around the desert searching for their next meal. I wanted to take on the challenge of creating a large art piece in colored pencil and chose my favorite Arizona birds, the Gambel's quail. It was a challenge indeed! But lots of fun to finally complete and get framed. I chose the name of "Papa Grande" as the largest and most majestic male on the left seemed to be the grand papa as he watches over the other members of his family. The rust colored "hat" outlined in white and topped off with one distinct black feather are the easily recognized features of the male quail. One female in the center of the picture illustrates a much duller plumage as she would be less visible on the nest. They are delightful to watch.
Included in the drawing are prickly pear cactus with yellow flowers and buds on the pads filled with long, sharp spines or thorns. In the background the viewer can find a soft image of the saguaro cactus as well a...
