Artist's Description

These exotic tropical passion fruit flowers bloom from April to November, giving way to tart yellow fruit about 3 inches in diameter. The vines are vigorous, often growing over 20ft in a single year. The yellow fruit falls from the plant when ripe. Fruits are best eaten when wrinkles appear on their surface. Pulp is often eaten fresh, seeds are edible. Used as a flavoring in drinks, desserts, sauces, and many other foods. The lilikoi is of an unknown origin. In recent years, the lilikoi (its Hawaiian name) has been well established throughout the Pacific Islands and parts of Central and South America.

About James Temple

James Temple

I live in Hawaii, 1200 feet above sea level, on the small rural island of Moloka'i. It is very quiet here, with only about 7,500 residents, sort of like living in a small town in the middle of the Pacific ocean. I appreciate the quiet life after spending 35 years in the advertising/design/illustration business in Chicago and San Francisco. I have always loved cooking. Eventually that love led me to a degree in the Culinary Arts. Since then I have designed and built a house, worked in restaurants, self-published three cookbooks, and took up photography. Now retired, I spend most of my time developing recipes and photographing them, plus researching and writing about Hawaii's culinary history on my food blog at http://tastinghawaii.com....
