One in a series of Mexican masks.
This mask is from the collection of the Rafael Coronel Mask Museum in Zacatecas, Zac. combined with a portion of plate XV, (La casa de las Monjas) from Views of Ancient Monuments in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan by Frederick Catherwood.
John Stephens, Frederick Catherwood and Samuel Cabot went to Uxmal in 1841. It was Stephens and Catherwoods second trip there. Stephens and Cabot came down with malaria almost immediately and were carried off to recover, leaving Catherwood alone at the ruins for six weeks during which time he completed more than fifty drawings.
In the past the long nosed god portrayed on the temple fae has been identified as Chac the Rain God. Snakes are also associated with rain. A good combination of images, I thought.
