Artist's Description

Poundmaker, a chief of the Saskatchewan Crees, surprisingly, was an adopted son of Crowfoot, renowned chief of the Blackfoot.Poundmaker was highly respected as a leader of his people by Indians and whites alike. His time as a chief was far too short however, for the western provinces were reeling under the strain of the most difficult period in their history. The buffalo were gone, many native people were starving, fear and unrest were everywhere. Then, on March 26, 1885, the Northwest Rebellion was unleashed in a bloody battle at Duck Lake, Saskatchewan between the Northwest Mounted Police and Metis insurgents led by Louis Riel. When the rebellion was finally defeated by military and police forces, Chief Poundmaker was arrested and sentenced to 3 years in Stoney Mountain Penetentiary. Six months into his sentence he was released. I admired my dad and others who possessed some talent at it. I practiced a lot because I wanted to be a pencil artist, too. Some years later, I studied art in earnest; won a couple of scholarships, took courses at the Ontario College of Art and the Artist's Workshop in Toronto. Eventually, I became a freelance illustrator. Of course I used various mediums, but pencil work was always the foundation of everything.
