The grizzly bear, one of the last great symbols of wilderness, is a powerful predator, capable of sprinting up to 35 mph, and weighing as much as 350-600 pounds. Grizzles are omnivores, meaning they eat both meat and plants. In Yellowstone, grizzles feed on elk, trout, bison, carrion, pine nuts, army cutworm moths, grasses, roots, and berries. Grizzlies hibernate in dens during the winter. 1-3 cubs may be born (occasionally even 4) in January. When they emerge from the den in the spring the mother is very protective and will not hesitate to charge if she perceives something as a threat. Numbering as many as 50,000 at the turn of the 20th century, grizzly numbers have been dramatically reduced. The Greater Yellowstone Area supports one of the last populations in the lower 48 states with 1200-1400 bears.

I grew up in southwest Ohio and attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio where I majored in Zoology. I moved to Wyoming in 1995 and was drawn to this area because it represents one of the last great wild places in the lower 48 states. With the Greater Yellowstone Area in my backyard, the photographic opportunities abound.
