Artist's Description
Established in 1720 by Fray Antonio Margil de Jesus, Mission San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo served as the model mission in Texas. Mission San Jose's grand scale, exquisite architecture, and emphasis upon community drew heavy praise from visitors. The "Queen of the Missions," San Jose continues its spiritual mission to the residents of San Antonio.
The intricate stone carved entrance highlights the family lineage of the Virgin May and Jesus. The lower portion of the doorway features Mary's parents, St. Joachim (l) and St. Anne (r) holding the infant Mary. The upper portion of the carving features St. Joseph (San Jose) holding the infant Jesus flanked by St. Dominic (l) and St. Francis of Assisi (r). The cross atop the facade represents Jesus.

Stephen, this is another masterful capture of the San Jose mission. I like the color image against the blue sky and the black and white image, equally well. It is a stunning church and causes me to miss seeing such architecture, as I routinely did in New Mexico. l/f
