Yes, Trudi, I love ravens too.... There is many of them in winter in my countryside. Usualy people don't love them. They hate their voices and color (!) ..and because old legends in France and bad old feelings : it's ridiculous, these birds are very intelligents and a couple stays all the life together. I appreciate your description and poem. And ! I love the way you've painted them, colors and composition, and the vegetation on the background. So beautiful !

Wow,wow, wow, Trudi Love,, the aerial feeling of abandonment, the birds cawing & tussling for food scraps, with wonderful wet in wet light reflections coming through, as they descend in a clamor with wings akimbo. A new firm favorite. On my wish list.Need to find a space on my wall, added, Fav. P.S. Ravens are very spiritual beings, having connections with Golgotha, as the tried to pull the nails from the hands of the Christ on the cross on Good Friday.

Trudi Doyle replied:

Thanks Jody for your lovely comment - Interesting legend and connection with the nails in Christ's hands - had not heard it before !

Artist's Description

Watercolour of Ravens and Crows in a wild woodland which is part of my neglected garden -In winter the crows appear in groups and amuse me by their antics and beauty. Called feathered apes for their simian smarts, crows use tools, understand physics, and recognize themselves and humans. New research suggests that the brainy birds may be even smarter than was previously thought, given a complex problem and an assortment of tools. I love this poem ( by Lisl auf der Heide ) Black Birds: .When the crows come black against the darkening sky their wings obscure the sun and small sounds drown in their strident caws. They storm the walnut tree snatch the green fruit drop it from great heights retrieve the cracked kernels. Again and again they dive From tree to ground feathers gleaming where stray sunrays touch. And when the mountains turn blue with the haze of evening the crows lift off in ebony formation head toward some secret roost where they blend into the night.
