Red hibiscuses bloom from the darkness of their leaves like an explosion of tiny flames, and as common as they are in Los Angeles, their bright beauty still draws me in. The extraordinary can be found in the ordinary, if only we pay attention. Originally, this was the fourth in a series of four flower pieces I created to honor Mother's Day.

Born in the USA, but I grew up in Chile, where poetry and magic realism are not just genres, but the natural order of things. In my teens, we moved back to the USA, first to Indiana, then to Nebraska; where the solitude of endless skies and prairie drew me within to my own realms of imagination. Then, I went to study drama in London, UK, where I was inspired by the culture and museums filled with the world's greatest masterpieces. And now I live in Los Angeles, under Griffith Park, with Sky, the cat, where I am surrounded by year-round flowers in bloom and the beautiful faces of all colors, ages and genders that Hollywood seems to draw in. I started painting early on, when as an only child having mostly my own imagination to entertain...
