Artist's Description
This is a photograph of Redondo Peak looming high above the Valles Grande of the Valles Caldera National Preserve in the Jemez Mountains of Northern New Mexico. The Valles Caldera National Preserve is a 89,716 acre preserve in the Jemez Mountains. The Caldera is an ancient volcano which had collapsed onto it self after several major eruptions. The caldera measures 12 miles (19 km) across. The average elevation of the caldera floor sits at approximately 8,200 feet above sea-level while Redondo Peak rises to an elevation of 11,258 feet above sea-level. The Cerro la Jarra lava dome (small forested hill center-left in the photo) is also visible.
