On a trip to the Northwest coast this past summer, we stopped at Ruby Beach in Washington. The jutting rocks off of the shoreline were spectacular. However, I soon found myself lost in minutia as I examined the perfectly round rocks that had washed ashore. The colors and textures were all subtly different, and they stacked up so exquisitely! While sitting on the huge logs that were strewn across the beach, we compiled about a dozen cairns to take home with us, some to give away and some to keep as a favorite souvenir of a peaceful moment in time.
