Artist's Description

Saugatuck Michigan has the only remaining chain-driven ferry in the USA. Built in 1838, it has three pulleys to keep the ferry boat tracking straight as it is pulled by HUMAN POWER across the Kalamazoo River. Once the ferry is safely boarded and ready for the crossing the operator wields a very loud airhorn to alert nearby watercraft that the 19th century boat has the right-of-way. Then the operator turns a crank to propel the ferry along the chain to the other side of the river. The 200 foot journey takes the smiling passengers to the next leg of their sojourn to Lake Michigan’s Oval Beach. I photographed the chain ferry section of the river, including the iconic waymark on far shore, hours after the ferry had docked for the night. It was a calm mid-Summer evening; the Kalamazoo River mirroring yonder shore to display a majestic marriage of humankind and nature.
