Exiting Bethlehem for our return trip to Jerusalem, my family and I walked along the Barrier wall separating the Palestinian West bank from Israel. Expressions of strife, anguish, conflict, anger, fear, resentment, and hope mark the wall winding along the edge of Bethlehem. We made our way through the exit/entrance--an arduous process of Palestinians making their way daily to/from jobs in Jerusalem--and boarded a crowded local bus back into Jerusalem. We traveled to Bethlehem to visit the Church of the Nativity--a symbolic site of peace and hope now cloaked in geopolitical conflict and distrust. This particular section of the Barrier Wall, with its watchtower and graffiti, captured the myriad of emotions in the region.
