About Nancy Kane Chapman
I began my love for art by watching my mother paint in oils and pastels. I must have caught the bug because I have enjoyed fifty years of drawing, painting and photography, urged on and instructed by professors, a botanist, a master of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy, water colorists and lately, mixed media devotees. After a course in cubism in 1973 I began to explore pen and ink geometric art. Each stroke was unplanned but exact, the designs becoming more elaborate and more fun to execute. First circles, then onward to straight lines, then organic and architectural constructions. Thirty years later I still dance out on the white space of a simple sheet of paper to weave new drawings. Picasa effects allow me to...

My family on both sides were pioneers and even when I was little I could share in those traditions handed down to both grandmothers! My mother's mother did this quilting with mom but also hooked beautiful rugs and taught me to sew. My father's mother did a very classical white work embroidery. Elegant and not to touch work! I knew you would find this fun to know, Karen. It's great to share art with you.

I have several old quilts hanging around my house. They are such a glorious reminders of our heritage and what life was like not that long ago. I love geometric patterns and the play with color, of course, they played with the scraps they had available, but those also then have a story to them. Are we looking at a piece of great-grandpa's shirt or great-grandma's skirt? I love the history. vf
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
I think this quilt was done before I came along but this same grandmother also hooked beautiful wool rugs and looking back on it I wonder now about why I had a kelly green winter coat. Surely she needed some leaves!!!

Nancy, What a joy it is to see this bright and delightful quilt top. The colors and patterns are all so interesting. It makes me think of quilts that my mother and grandmother made. (I still have them.) F/V
Nancy Kane Chapman replied:
I had another one from my family, signed 1859 I think and guess whose border collie ate a hole out of it? A big one, too. Years ago.
