This is Highway 20 just outside Coupeville, heading north. I has been designated a national scenic highway, and with little wonder. To your left is west and the heart of the Ebey's Landing National Historic Reserve. This is the first national park devoted to an unbroken cultural history of farming in this area. By succeeding in making it a federal park, Whidbey Island residents have saved this beautiful landscape from development and have insured that people in the future will see it as we do today, and did in the past. On the ridge barely visible under the fog is Sherman Road named for the farm family that has lived on it for years. At the end of Sherman to the left is Sunnyside Cemetery. Its occupants have a great view of the Landing and it's one of the oldest in Washington State. In what seems like an annual event, Roger Sherman (also cemetery caretaker) acts as historic advisor to high school students who dress in costume as the people in the graves.
