This photo of Sitka, Alaska, was taken from the footpath on the John OConnell Bridge. The bridge connects the city of Sitka on Baranof Island to Japonski Island. The citys airport, the University of Alaska Southeast, Mt. Edgecumbe High School, a Native hospital, and a Coast Guard Air Station are located on Japonski Island. (The island was named by Russians around 1805, after Japanese fishermen became stranded on the island.) Baranof Island, seen here, is named for Alexander Baranov, who was instrumental in the founding of the first European settlement on the Island, as Governor of the Russian American Company.
I am a long-time Alaskan, having lived here since 1970. I am retired from state service, after working for the Alaska Department of Corrections for twenty years. In my spare time, I take pictures. I have enjoyed photography since junior high, and I have an extensive photo library. I am working to turn my pictures into an income source to supplement my retirement. My photos include landscapes, nature photos, and abstracts. I have a particular fondness for shooting abandoned places or objects. Subjects range from Southeast Alaska to Interior Alaska, and the stretch of Canada in between. I retain the rights to all images I have posted here.
