This striking red maple was on the shore of one of the thousands of islands around Parry Sound. The flagged pine trees line the horizon and give away the direction of the prevailing winds. Since the prevailing winds are also southwest to west and onshore, the flagged trees also reveal the direction that I was looking.

The close proximity to civilization is only revealed by the hydro pole tucked among the flagged pines. This place is remote but not without all of the conveniences of civilization.

I was listening to my music collection in the studio. The unusual coincidence was that out of the thousands of song, Garth Brooks' "The Red Strokes" from 1994 played just as I started to work on the soft maple. "Oh, the red strokes, Tempered and strong (Fearlessly drawn)" The probably of this are pretty small - I could figure out the exact number but it would not reduce my surprise at the coincidence.

I paint outside - nothing between my eyes and the inspiration. That special connectivity gets into the pigments and you quickly realize that we are all stewards of the land, privileged to appreciate its beauty during our lifetime but responsible for leaving the environment better off for the future and all inhabitants... Phil was born and raised along the St. Lawrence of Ontario, Canada and studied at Queens University as a nuclear physicist. A meteorologist for Environment Canada for 35 years, Phil specializes in severe weather and training. Remote sensing is his forte - you might want to see a tornado before you die... but not just before you die! He has farmed, raised bees, written books and articles, lectured and instructed...
