Artist's Description

The Ship first set sail on May 29, 1932. It was built by a Dutch immigrant named Herbert Paulson. Paulsen built the ship around the structure of the original Grand View Hotel. The view from the site had been earlier described as "one of the most magnificant views on the North American continent". The establishment was to enjoy a number of sucessful years, but this was not to last. When the Pennsylvania Turnpike opened on October 1, 1940, it spelled the beginning of the end for the S.S. Grandview. Paulsen ran the business as best as he could until his death in 1973. The property was sold to Jack and Mary Loya for the price of $70,000 a few years later.The Loyas reopened the business under the rather lackluster name of �Noah�s Ark� and added a petting zoo. The resulting business failed. The Ship closed it�s doors for the last time in 1987. The Ship was sinking fast, but there was still hope. I first learned the Polaroid transfer process, while I was in college for photography at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh (1992-94). The process allows me to print a color Polaroid image onto watercolor paper. I was quite taken with the results of the process and set about learning the intricacies of the art as well as helping other students in learning the process as well. My department head noticed the work that I'd been doing with the process and sent me to some workshops hosted by the Polaroid Corporation. It was through Polaroid that I learned how to do several other unique printing processes utilizing Polaroid films. While in college I began doing urban exploration.
