Illustration showing an overview of stem cell transplantation, the newer term for bone marrow transplantation. The apheresis catheter is implanted into the patient where blood from the internal jugular vein is mechanically pumped from the body. The blood is filtered into its components plasma, white cells (including stem cells) and red blood cells. After the patient receives radiation or chemotherapy, the healthy white blood cells are pumped back into the patient.
