St.John's, Newfoundland, Canada is the most easterly city in North America, with the harbour opening into the North Atlantic Ocean. Founded 24 June 1497, and
established 5 August 1583 by Royal Charter of Queen Elizabeth I, it was incorporated in 1921. Its name has been attributed to the feast day of John the Baptist, when John Cabot was believed to have sailed into the harbour in 1497, and also to a Basque fishing town with the same name.
It has a long history as a fishing and shipping port, and over the years has been held by the English, French and Dutch, eventually becoming a British Colony on a permanent basis.St. John's served as the capital city of the Colony of Newfoundland and the Dominion of Newfoundland before Newfoundland became Canada's tenth province in 1949.
Signal Hill overlooks the city and the narrow harbour entrance. It is the location of Cabot Tower which was built in 1897 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's discovery of Newfoundland,...
