What began as a simple project--"Why not paint some panels to cover that ugly cardboard screen?"--turned into a year-long project. The saga began as I left the artists' supply store with my first piece of 4' x 6' paper tied to the roof of the car, only to have it fly off in the midst of traffic on busy road. By the time I had found a place to pull off and managed to weave through the traffic to rescue it, the pristine paper had a large tire track running down its middle. This unwieldiness should have given me a clue.

First came days of sketching to come up with a composition that would work in an almost 6-foot square, four-panel format. Measuring (never my strong suit) and transferring the major elements of the composition to the large sheets of paper caused me weeks of frustration--all I really wanted to do was PAINT. My work as an artist began in childhood, continued through college and early marriage. The summer before my second child was born (in August) found me bending, sweating, over 5-foot-square canvases laid out on the floor, creating boldly abstract acrylic paintings. Then life took over, and I put my paints to rest for almost 20 years. Since I have returned to painting, I have had several solo shows as well as having paintings chosen for a number of juried exhibitions. After completing a series of small, highly detailed watercolors set, jewel-like, in a much larger background that is a loose, abstracted version of the central painting, I returned to my interest in the human figure.
